Well-Dressing-1-Bakewell

Dressing the well is an ancient tradition thought to be of a pagan origin. Many of the villages and towns in the Peak District have a well dressing during the summer months. It is believed to be in celebration of the god of water which even today is an important resource and even more so in the days before we had running water plumbed into our houses.

This years dressing was made opposite to Bakewell Cottage (also known as Chalice Cottage) and then carried to the end of Church Alley where it was erected next to the entrance to Bakewell All Saints Church. The dressing is in honour of the Queens Platinum Jubilee, which we all celebrated in June.

The decoration is created flat in the first instance before then being located upright at it final destination. The background is made from clay and flower petals, leaves and stones are pressed into the clay to form the image. Groups of very patient people get together for the weeks prior to the dressing to create the beautiful images.

The well dressing in 2022 at Bakewell had a very British theme of tea and cakes. We really liked the Union Jack hanging out of the teapot!

The well dressing can be found at the end of Church Alley, Bakewell, only steps away from Bakewell Cottage (Chalice Cottage).
